My expalnation of topic –
Australian schools have a growing population of refugge students to educate and care for. Refugees generally have a limited or no education background, have been in environments where they receive little health care and have been exposed to events that are traumatic. One ntering school in Australia, Refugee students have to learn English, asimilate into Australian culture, learn nd socialise.
Educators are in a prime psoition to notice when students may be experiencing learning difficulties/disabilities and social and emotional issues. They wish to respond with relevant intervention that will support the student. Refugee families are generally not in a position to afford private specialist assessment or intervention. In some schools the usual reponse is to employ psychometric assessment is used to determine student’s needs and determine the best course of intervention. However, psychometric assessment is normed against a specific population. If used with a group that is different to the normed population, the results would be considered invalid and unreliable.
