Self-directed learning can be defined as; “a process by which individuals take the initiative, with or without the assistance of others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identify human and material resources for learning, choosing and implementing appropriate learning strategies, and evaluating learning outcomes.” (Knowles, 1975, p. 18).

Question – Critically examine the case for Higher Education Institutions to develop self-directed learning capabilities in their students.

In answering this question, you should consider;

  • The need for self-directed learning as a core capability required of today’s employers
  • How self-directed learning capability might assist Human Resource Management/ Human Resource Development graduates in their future professional careers, in particular
  • The impact of any other factors in developing self-directed learning with students from diverse backgrounds.
