Week 5 Discussion #3 – Knowledge-Based Companies

Zack notes “to operate efficiently in today’s economy, it is necessary to become a knowledge-based organization.” He concludes his article by noting that even though its not easy to accomplish “any company – even one that makes cement – can find a significant and sustainable competitive advantage in becoming a real knowledge-based organization.”

In the context of the four categories that Zack has identified (process, place, purpose, and perspective), select a company you are familiar with (or do a little research) and discuss why (what facts, activities, etc.) lead you to believe they are a knowledge-based company.

Activity #2 in this week’s powerpoint asked that you come up with two problems or issues related to your graduate work, one complicated and one complex, and then think of 3 to 5 ways of changing each of the problems.

Did you solve both of them? Do you want a second opinion, third opinion, fourth opinion, etc.? While we will meet in class- Let’s still use this forum in Canvas to discuss and develop solutions (using the techniques from this week’s presentation). We’ll summarize these thoughts on class.

How is knowledge managed in this organization? is there a chief knowledge officer? Is there support for knowledge management from leadership? How is this demonstrated? Is knowledge management ingrained in the culture?

Carolina Reid talks about what KM looks like in various organizations. What are some of the traits that she suggests are most important? Are any of these missing from your work environment? In your organization, how would web experience management as explained by Mike Vertal work?

Major Patrick Michaelis and Major Everett Spain talk about the power of knowledge in an organization as being very much related to culture. Do you see some issues that might work in a military environment with regard to this subject that wouldn’t work in your business environment? Relate your answer to what you know or discover about diasporas.

The Knowledge Management world (and this class) includes lots of models. Some seem very academic, and some seem to be very abstract.

Did you find the models to be practical? Can you apply these models to the workplace, or is there a missing piece that’s needed to truly manage knowledge?
